Alfred Henry Maurer

Alfred Henry Maurer (1868-1932) was an important contributor to American modernism, recognized for his inventive and bold painting style. Born in New York City, Maurer initially followed traditional academic methods, shaped by the influence of his father, Louis Maurer, a prominent lithographer. Nevertheless, his enthusiasm for fresh ideas and visual approaches soon drove him to pursue education and inspiration overseas.

In 1897, Maurer made the life-altering choice to relocate to Paris, France, which had a profound effect on his artistic development and outlook. During his time in Paris, he encountered the most progressive European artistic trends. Abandoning more traditional methods, Maurer eagerly adopted the principles of modern art and found encouragement in the work of figures such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.

Noted for its daring colors and expressive forms, Maurer’s art clearly exhibits the influence of Fauvism and Cubism. He gained recognition for his forward-thinking paintings that defied the conventions dominating the American art scene of his era. Through abstract works and vibrant color schemes, he distinguished himself as one of the earliest Americans to deeply engage with European modernism.

Alfred Henry Maurer enjoyed international acclaim over the course of his life.
