Geza Vastagh

Géza Jenő Ferenc Vastagh (3 September 1866, Kolozsvár – 5 November 1919, Budapest) was a Hungarian painter best known for focusing on animal subjects. His works, marked by their precise and lifelike detail, frequently depicted livestock and wild creatures, highlighting both their strength and elegance. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Vastagh played an important role in Hungarian art.

Artistic talent ran in his family; his father, György Vastagh Sr., was also a painter, while his brother, György Vastagh Jr., gained renown as a sculptor. Géza Vastagh received his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he absorbed influences that shaped his approach to realism and composition. These qualities can be clearly seen in the naturalism characteristic of his animal paintings.

Vastagh traveled widely during his career, seeking opportunities to observe animals in their native settings. His explorations led him to destinations such as North Africa and Egypt, where he studied and made sketches of large mammals, including lions and cattle. These journeys not only enhanced his artistic skills but also expanded the diversity of his painting subjects beyond scenes familiar in Hungary.
