Goyo Hashiguchi

Goyō Hashiguchi (1880-1921) was an eminent Japanese artist who played a significant role in the modern resurgence of woodblock printmaking, commonly referred to as the shin hanga movement. Born as the successor to a samurai family, Hashiguchi began studying art with his father, who taught him in the traditional Kano school, an institution known for its focus on classical Japanese painting techniques. This grounding in traditional art left a lasting impression on Hashiguchi's precise technique in his later creations.

Subsequently, Hashiguchi broadened his artistic experience by pursuing studies in Western oil painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. The combination of these two forms of education enabled him to merge Japanese and Western artistic methods, a unique quality that came to distinguish his woodblock prints. His collaboration with Watanabe Shozaburo, a publisher associated with the shin hanga movement, was particularly crucial. Watanabe encouraged Hashiguchi to explore the woodblock printing medium and worked closely with him on several significant prints that ultimately shaped the shin hanga style.

Goyō Hashiguchi is renowned, above all, for his stunning portraits of women, referred to as bijin-ga. He often portrayed his subjects in private settings such as bathhouses, hot springs, or dressing rooms, thereby capturing an aura of quiet grace and heightened sensitivity. Known for his dedication to detail and an uncompromising pursuit of perfection, Hashiguchi oversaw every phase of the creative process himself, from the initial design through to carving and printing.

Throughout his short life, Hashiguchi produced only 14 prints, adhering to a strict standard of excellence for each piece. Although his body of work is small, these prints are regarded as some of the finest achievements of modern Japanese art and are highly prized by collectors. Today, the woodblock prints of Goyō Hashiguchi are celebrated for their refined beauty, technical brilliance, and the perspective they provide on both the traditional and evolving culture of early twentieth-century Japan.
