Henri Privat-Livemont

Henri Privat-Livemont (1861–1936), a renowned Belgian artist, was born in Schaerbeek, Brussels. He is best known for his influential role in the Art Nouveau movement, particularly for his distinctive posters that exemplify the elegance and flowing lines associated with this style.

Between 1883 and 1889, Privat-Livemont undertook his artistic training in Paris, gaining experience in the studios of Lemaire, Lavastre & Duvignaud. During these years, he worked alongside Lemaire to produce decorative pieces for prominent locations such as the Théâtre Français and Paris’s Hôtel de Ville, refining his abilities in large-scale decorative arts.

After his return to Brussels, Privat-Livemont brought his expertise to local projects that included the decoration of theaters and casinos. His talent for combining intricate artistic detail with practical public settings enhanced the city’s visual landscape and played a role in the growing popularity of Art Nouveau throughout Belgium.

Henri Privat-Livemont solidified his status as a poster art master in 1897 by designing the poster for the Brussels International Exposition. Famous works like his Absinthe Robette and Casino de Cabourg posters were featured in the prestigious publication Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, and are still regarded as outstanding examples of Art Nouveau poster art.
