Hermann Scherer

Hermann Scherer (8 February 1893 – 13 May 1927) was a Swiss painter and sculptor who spoke German and was associated with Expressionism. Born in Rümmingen, Scherer became known for an artistic style marked by intensity and emotion, placing him among the foremost figures in early twentieth-century German Expressionism.

Though his first training was as a stonemason, Scherer soon turned his attention to the arts, developing a singular visual approach in both sculpture and painting. His artworks display dynamic brushstrokes, striking colors, and expressive forms, all of which reveal the strong influence of the artistic movements and fellow artists of his era, as well as the turbulent personal and social circumstances surrounding him.

Scherer became affiliated with the Expressionist group Die Brücke (The Bridge), especially following his encounter with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, whose creations played a crucial role in shaping Scherer’s own development as an artist. In particular, Scherer’s wood sculptures stand out for their emotive force and rough, direct lines, capturing the essence of early Expressionism.

Although his career was brief—Scherer passed away at the age of 34—his impact on both Swiss and German art remained profound. His work, noted for its power and its place in the progress of European modernism, is now held in numerous museums and collections.
