About the artist
John Rea Neill was a distinguished American illustrator, best known for his extensive contributions to the Oz series. Although his career as an illustrator for magazines and children’s books lasted for many years, it is his work connected to the enchanting Land of Oz that has become most enduring. Neill created illustrations for over forty stories set in Oz, underscoring how vital his influence was in establishing the visual character of this much-loved fantasy realm.
Neill’s artwork enhanced not only the original Oz stories penned by L. Frank Baum, but also those written by Ruth Plumly Thompson, and later, the tales he wrote himself.
