About the artist

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was an Italian polymath whose pursuits and accomplishments encompassed art, science, engineering, anatomy, and many other areas. As a key figure of the High Renaissance, he displayed exceptional curiosity and an unceasing quest for knowledge throughout his lifetime. Renowned for his diverse abilities and inventive genius, Leonardo has become the quintessential Renaissance man, with contributions that continue to shape numerous fields to this day.

Of Leonardo’s many artistic achievements, the “Mona Lisa” is distinguished not only as his most renowned painting but also as the world’s most famous portrait. The painting’s mysterious smile, refined application of sfumato, and evocative landscape backdrop have captivated both viewers and experts for generations. Similarly, “The Last Supper” stands as another of his signature works and remains the most frequently reproduced religious painting in existence, capturing the pivotal scene when Jesus reveals his impending betrayal.

Leonardo’s influence stretched far beyond the realm of painting. His drawing known as the “Vitruvian Man” has come to epitomize the union of art and science, reflecting his fascination with human proportions and classical ideals. His notebooks are filled with detailed sketches and careful observations, addressing themes like anatomy, mechanics, flight, and hydraulics, and demonstrating his forward-thinking approach to understanding the human body and the forces of nature.

Leonardo’s enduring legacy is further strengthened by the profound effect he had on later generations of artists and thinkers. His methods, discoveries, and spirit of experimentation played a pivotal role in shaping the development of Western art and science. Alongside Michelangelo, a contemporary, Leonardo’s collective oeuvre remains a touchstone in art history and a lasting wellspring of inspiration throughout the world.
