Søren L. Lange

Søren Læssøe Lange was a Danish painter and draftsman recognized for his impact on landscape art at the close of the 19th century. His body of work was centered on rendering both natural and man-made landscapes with great attention to detail, embodying the artistic trends and sensibilities of his time.

Around 1800, Lange was particularly active as a landscape draftsman. It was during these years that he produced many city prospectuses—artistic and meticulous renderings that captured urban settings and public areas. His expertise in draftsmanship offered important visual documentation of the Danish environment amid a period of notable cultural and architectural change.

Beyond urban views, Søren L. Lange is also remembered for his portrayals of recently established romantic gardens scattered across Denmark. The places he illustrated included Classens Have, Enrum, Jægerspris Castle, Liselund, Marienborg (Møn?), and Sandholt. His works showcased the period’s enthusiasm for landscaped gardens and the romantic reverence for nature.

Through his artistic endeavors, Lange played a significant role in recording and preserving the look and mood of key Danish gardens and urban spaces for posterity.
